Outpatient prescription requests

Date sent: Tuesday 11 September 2018

Dear %recipient.firstname%,

For many years GPs and the LMC have requested that hospital specialist provide legible and comprehensive information when making requests for GPs to prescribe following outpatient attendances.  Unfortunately, hospital specialists have continued to provide inadequate information.  We believe that this is not safe.

Furthermore, the NHS Hospital contract obliges specialists to provide a typed letter to be received by the GP within seven days of a clinic attendance.  This makes hand written letters redundant.

The LMC has thus formulated a letter to return to specialists explaining that practices no longer accept hand-written prescription requests.  This letter can be returned whenever the practices receives such a request.

We have also produced a letter to explain this to patients, and a PowerPoint to be used on waiting room screens.

These resources are attached and are available on the LMC website.

Please make use of these resources so that this unsafe practice stops.

Best wishes

Kieran
